My American Idiolect

A detailed account of my accent

Table of Contents

Here is my hopefully accurate accent in IPA. Any distinctions I make are meaningful ones, so you will see soon that [ɑ] and [ɑˤ] are both written. Yes, those are very much different to me, so I include them.

Vowels

Lexical Sets

Generally Monophthongs

| Lexical Set | Realization(s) | |————-|:————–:| | TRAP | [æ] , [ẽə̃̆] | | BATH | [æ] , [ẽə̃̆] | | PALM | [ɑ] , [ɑˤ] | | LOT | [ä] | | CLOTH | [ä̝] | | THOUGHT | [ɑ] | | KIT | [ɪ] , [ɪ̈ ] | | DRESS | [ɛ] | | STRUT | [ʌ] | | FOOT | [ʊ̞] | | FLEECE | [] |

TRAP & BATH Set

This is (I think) fairly standard for American English where /æ/ raising exists, thus:

  • ⟨at⟩ [ˈæt]

  • ⟨ant⟩ [ˈẽə̃̆nt̚]

PALM Set

This is [ɑ] except when before a pharyngealized consonant (like dark l), where it is [ɑˤ] .

  • ⟨father⟩ [ˈfɑðɚ]

  • ⟨palm⟩ [ˈpʰɑˤɫm]

Generally Diphthongs

Mergers

  • Mare-mayor :heavy_check_mark:
  • Poor-pour :heavy_check_mark:
  • Cot-caught :x:
  • Don-dawn :x:

Innovations

Intrusive /l/

I have a sound rule where:

oʊ > o̞ː /__ɫ/

Thus:

  • ⟨lonely⟩ /ˈɫoʊn.li/ -> ⟨lolnely⟩ /ˈɫo̞ːɫn.li/
  • ⟨both⟩ /ˈboʊθ/ -> ⟨bolth⟩ /ˈbo̞ːɫθ/
  • ⟨only⟩ /ˈoʊn.li/ -> ⟨olnly⟩ /ˈo̞ːɫn.li/
  • ⟨old⟩ /ˈoʊld/ -> ⟨old⟩ /ˈo̞ːɫd/

Owl tensing

aʊ(.ə) > æ /__l/

Thus:

  • ⟨owl⟩ /aʊ(.ə)l/ -> ⟨æl⟩ /æ(.ə)l/
  • ⟨vowel⟩ /ˈvaʊ.əl/ -> ⟨væl⟩ /ˈvæ(.ə)l/
